Incorporating antiques into your home can be a tricky task. Avoiding the outdated feel that often comes with an antique while still maintaining its aged integrity is very important. Each antique can offer its own air of sentimentality to a room that should be respected, especially when it is a family heirloom. Below are some tips to follow when decorating with antiques that will take their antiquity and “bring it back to life”…

1. Repurpose! So many antiques have be come outdated not only in style but in use! Repurposing an antique can give a crafty twist on an old classic. Like this old trunk used as a side table, or the vintage doorknobs used as curtain tiebacks.

   2. Mix Styles! To create a little contrast and highlight your antique, it is often interesting to mix it in a place with opposite style, like a more modern room. Not only does it allow your antique to stand out, but it adds character and whimsy!

   3. Paint! A fresh coat of paint can give your antique new life! Make sure beforehand that your antique will be able to withstand the paint and that you’re comfortable with altering it. Like this dresser below, goes from outdated to classic with just a coat of paint and some new hardware.

   4. Reupholster! This is one of the bigger transformations for your antique, but it is one that is often very necessary. Unlike wood or metal antiques, furniture’s upholstery can suffer from a lot of wear and tear. Below is a client’s heirloom sofa that we reupholstered and changed the legs on, and as you can see it completely transformed!
