One of the most important things we keep in mind when designing is that a home is as “livable” as possible. For many homes the major task is that of storage! Especially in homes with small spaces storage can be very difficult to implement in an appealing and functional way. For those of you who enjoy organization and can’t stand the look of clutter we have gathered a few “hidden” storage tips for you!

For a lot of people the most important room to be free of clutter is the kitchen! Countertop space, especially in a smaller home, is so precious it can’t be wasted on storage and so we love these two hidden cabinet storage ideas! Eliminating the usual pots for flour and sugar from the counter and storing them within a cabinet is genius! As well as the utensil drawer that keeps all the most used utensils hidden but readily available for easy access.

Another area where storage is vital is the closet! For those of you with limited closet space, or shallow closets this vertical shoe storage is ideal! This is an example of where a closet doesn’t have the depth for clothes to hang, however even in a larger clothing closet this shoe storage would work against the walls as well. Most people also have ironing boards in their closet, which often take up a lot of space and can be quite cumbersome. In a recent project we had a specific spot built into the closet walls covered by a door, that when opened the ironing board can drop down from. Not only does this storage save space, but it is much more visually appealing to have the ironing board hidden!

Lastly in common living spaces like the living room or mudroom storage can be key. Often around the television storage is popular to hold DVD’s, books cable boxes etc. We love how below there is a door like attachment to cover the storage and keep a clean look in the living room. In the final photo you can see a tip that requires a bit more work but can make a world of difference. A client of ours desperately needed the storage provided by a mudroom but just didn’t have the space. We created a “in the wall” mudroom so to speak. With custom drawers and molding to fit their coats, shoes etc. This gave them the storage they needed without having to add an addition to their home.
